Feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unseen?

When anxiety, depression, difficulty focusing, changing moods, or poor sleep begin affecting daily life, it can be hard to know what to do next. Reaching out is a meaningful first step. At Xtra-Mile Psychiatry, James takes time to listen, help patients understand what they are experiencing, and work with them toward a treatment plan that fits their needs.

Meet James A. Nowell III, PMHNP-BC

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

James A. Nowell III, PMHNP-BC, is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and U.S. Navy veteran with more than two decades of nursing and military medical experience. He provides psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and personalized care for children, adolescents, and adults.

James believes patients deserve the time and space to explain what they are experiencing without feeling rushed or reduced to a diagnosis. He takes time to understand each person’s symptoms, history, concerns, and goals before developing a thoughtful, evidence-based treatment plan together.

“I don’t just prescribe. I listen, explain the options clearly,
and work with each patient to create a treatment plan that
  fits their needs.”

My Philosophy of Care

I believe good psychiatric care begins with listening. Every patient comes in with a different story, different concerns, and a different idea of what feeling better may look like.

My role is to understand the full picture, explain the available options clearly, and work with each patient to create a treatment plan that makes sense for them. Medication may be part of that plan, but it should always be prescribed thoughtfully, monitored carefully, and considered within the context of the person’s overall well-being.

I want patients to feel heard, respected, informed, and actively involved in their care
